Pantang- Meaning Things Not To Do In Hokkien

There are certain things which some Chinese are pretty particular with:-
  1. Happy and sad events can't clash together within 100 days to a year. If a relative or loved one were to pass away, the immediate family member can't attend a happy event, like wedding & housewarming.
  2. The Teochews treat their eldest male grandchild as their youngest son.
  3. If you are getting married & your friend who is getting married invites you to his wedding, u are not allowed to attend. The old people say happy events clash.
  4. The red packet can't be given twice for a happy event. Likewise for the condolence packet.
  5. One should not give shoes or lamp to a birthday boy or gal, as it is believed that you may bring the person to his deathbed.

These are some interesting stuff to share, especially to some blog readers who are not living in a place filled with Chinese.

Sorry hor, 1st superstition already not right...

It's not true ALL chinese believe in that. Some Hokkiens believe that when the eldest person in a family passes away, or the parents pass away, you have to get married within 100 days of the death, if not you have to wait 3 years.

So.. it's not true that auspicious events and death cannot clash at all.... This is normally followed if the deceased and person having an auspicious event come from DIFFERENT families...
