Record Breaking E-Filing Weekend
This weekend, the taxpayers who came by The Serangoon CC to e-file their taxes was huge. We had close to 100 taxpayers who came by the community centre to e-file their taxes. Fortunately, the 2 new volunteers, Zhihao & Moon were able to help us deal with the crowd control matters and the 4-line statement for taxi drivers and hawkers.
There were some cases which encountered problems that were beyond our control. The only thing that we could do was to jot down the problems encountered and enclose all the necessary documents of the e-filers who could not e-file and forward to IRAS by fax.
The problems include:-
- Taxpayer’s employer is under the “Auto-Inclusion Scheme”, which means the employer will file the taxpayer’s salary details to IRAS directly. But the salary shown on the IDRS (Income, Deductions, Reliefs Statement is totally different from his Form IR8E issued by his employer and given to him. The figures were so different that it also left me rather stunned. I managed to calm down the taxpayer and jotted down the problem. My advice to those taxpayers who are under the “auto-inclusion scheme” is to login to the IRAS using their Singpass or IRAS PIN to check that their salary information is correctly transmitted. In some cases, the salary information is not even transmitted at all, therefore you will need to click on the checkbox, “My employer is under the auto-inclusion scheme, then IRAS will retrieve the data from the employer to your e-filing record.
- Taxpayer wishes to claim for spouse relief, but e-filing system, which was designed before the Budget 2010 announcement that wife who is supporting husband will be eligible for spouse relief. My advice to those taxpayers is to e-file accordingly first, including submitting the tax return, then send an e-mail or letter to IRAS at spouserelief@iras.gov.sg with your name and tax reference number & your spouse’s NRIC No stating that you wish to claim for spouse relief
- Taxpayer had e-filed twice, but the information submitted is still wrong. How to rectify it? My advice to those taxpayers is to write in to IRAS to amend the filing details.
After the long, eventful session that lasted till about 6.30pm, I was asked by Zhihao & Moon to join them at Serangoon Garden Chomp Chomp Hawker Centre for dinner. We had stingray, sotong, fried oyster and popiah for dinner. I would like to thank Zhihao for the dinner treat. I feel a little bad though as he is a student but is quite capable enough as his part time job is able to support his family. Apparently, he is also in the accounting line, which is same as me & Moon.
I would like to wish Zhihao a happy birthday in advance. Next week, it will be my turn to return the favour. :)
